Premier Captain Bloods Best - Rick Gordon - Warrandyte Diary, Nov 2006

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us            Image Hosted by ImageShack.us            Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Captain and B&F, Matt Wood / James Logan, Best Clubman / Newly appointed Warrandyte Football Club Life Member, Brian Williams, with President's Award winner Nicole Andrew.

There were a few surprises when Warrandyte Football Club hosted around 200 players and guests at the annual gala vote count and presentation night at the luxurious Manningham Function Centre last month. The night was a climax to Warrandyte's Centenary celebrations which included winning the Eastern Football League Fourth Division premiership.

The Best and Fairest was won by club captain and favourite Matt Wood, with fierce defender Ben Reid runner up and the talented Todd Holman awarded third. Ben Reid also was judged the most courageous player, which got him over the line to win the inaugural Club Champion award presented (and named after) the legendary John O'Brien. It was tight for Most Determined, with the coaches having to select from a team full of focussed young premiership players, but they finally decided on the shy half forward Grant McAdam, whose brand of exciting, yet no-nonsense football had impressed them throughout the season.

Matthew Wood had led the side consistently throughout the season, gathering numerous possessions in spite of constant tagging and attention from the opposition. He was also popular with the umpires, finishing third in the League votes. It was no surprise that he returned from a high blow in the semi-final suffering from concussion and with teeth missing to play a major part in the Grand Final victory. Ben Reid also endured pain in the Grand Final, playing the last two games with a broken hand.

Best First Year Player went to the high marking Lee Evans, another junior player to emerge in the seniors, with the reliable Aidan Davey taking out the prestigious Players' Award. Player of the Finals went to coach Peter Green, whose inspirational efforts in the two finals were decisive. Michael Morello received the Ron Wilson Medal for leading both the club and the league goal kicking, with his safe, strong hands and laid back yet accurate kicking style.

The contribution of club volunteers was also recognised on the night, with Phil Treeby's Presidents Award going to Reserves team manager, Nicole Andrew, and Life Membership bestowed on long time advocate of junior and Under 18 football, Brian Williams. Best Club Person went to secretary, vice president and social convenor, James Logan. The committee surprised him by updating his carefully prepared PowerPoint presentation at the last minute while he was distracted by the pre-dinner drinks and finger food in the foyer of the council chambers.

Peter Green continued the community theme in his speech, dedicating this season's premiership win to the hundreds of local supporters, parents and volunteers around the club, and outlining his plans to strengthen the community ties. The evening had all the hallmarks of the slightly more famous Brownlow count, with the players unrecognisable in suits and ties and glamorous partners in designer gowns. Most of the players from all three teams were in attendance, and many of the parents enjoyed the magnificent food and drinks on offer, adding to the social buzz of the occasion.

RESERVES

Reserves coach David Young started the proceedings with the awards for the second eighteen. Best and Fairest was won by triple premiership player 'old man' Dale Vitiritti, with equal second shared by the nuggety Cal Haskings and fleet footed on-baller Rick Bourke. Third went to the reliable half-back Lee Giampietro.

Jarrod Boyce was awarded Most Courageous, and the Most Determined player was big Bernie Opteynde. The Players' Award was taken out by a well deserving Cal Haskings, and Rick Bourke came to the attention of the umpires, finishing second in the league Best and Fairest.

A new award was introduced this year, the John McCartin Jnr WCC/WFC Best Sportsperson, recognising the connection between the football club and the cricket club. Craig Lincoln's combined tally of votes in both sports gave him the honour of winning the inaugural trophy.

Glory for the Bloods - Michael Rogers, Manningham Leader

WARRANDYTE ensured its centenary season will be long remembered as one of the club's greatest, claiming the EFL Division 4 premiership with a 24-point win against the Whitehorse Pioneers at Mitcham on Saturday.

In a contest governed by a squally wind blowing to the scoreboard end, the Bloods smashed the Pioneers around the contests after quarter-time to record a 12.12 (84) to 8.12 (60) victory.
Warrandyte's tall utility Todd Holman received the Frank Bibby medal for his outstanding display, capped with the game-sealing goal from outside 50m during the final term. Holman's goal was the highlight of the Bloods' stirring fightback, which began in the second term after the Pioneers broke to a two-goal lead in the first term. Luke Ebzery sparked his side with a classy second quarter, booting one long goal from the flank and setting up another. He was forced from the field after copping an errant finger in the eye, but his teammates had lifted sufficiently to cover for his absence.
Holman was sensational all day, while Matt Treeby gave tremendous drive from half-back. Ruckman Craig Dick worked tirelessly against Pioneers giant Brad Hancock and coach Peter Green delivered a final-quarter performance that will long be remembered by the Bloods faithful.
Green paid tribute to the work ethic of his young team after the game. ``Our focus was about getting numbers to every contest and putting pressure on every contest,'' he said. ``We knew we had to keep working hard all day, get from contest to contest and win our share of the 50-50 balls. ``The third quarter was very important, matching them into the wind, and when Holman kicked that goal in the last quarter, they just dropped their heads and I knew we had it.'' Green said the club's promotion was just reward for its hard work this year, but he said the Bloods had to maintain their effort.``We've still got a lot of improving to do, but we've got a young side and there's a lot of improvement in them,'' he said. ``Their willingness to learn and to work hard will hold us in good stead.''

Settled - September 7th, 2006

Having the weeks rest has aided Warrandyte no end and they'll head into Sunday's Grand Final at full strength. Without to much fuss coach Peter Green has continued to focus on the facits of the game he introduced to the playing group during preseason training back in November.
A settled lineup will go in confident of winning the big prize however in no way will they be underestimating the opposition. Whitehorse have beaten the Bloods twice this season including their only home defeat. However there are seven changes to the side that went down in the Round 11 clash and the key inclusions have certainly bolstered the line up. Criag Dick is probably the most notable and reflecting on the Round 12 match review we can see how important the big man will be:
"Despite losing key bigmen Craig Dick and Mick Stewart before the match, the team was confident of a victory. Aided by a strong breeze Whitehorse got the jump and skipped away to an early lead. It was apparent very early that the Pioneers would dominate in the ruck and in turn centre clearances".
Although within a kick at three quarter time Warrandyte failed to apply scoreboard pressure during the match as was the case when the two sides met earlier in the season. Whitehorse kicking an uncanny 20 goals three to Warrandyte's 10 goals 13.
With key inclusions, a greater understanding of what is required and a very tight bond between the playing group the foundations are set to ensure a Bloods victory this Sunday in the club's Centenary year. They will certainly have the crowd support at Walker Park on what promises to be a memorable day. Go Bloods!

Just Passing Through

Motivation for Grand Finals is not something players need to search for. Reasons for winning and dedicating the win however is another story. Warrandyte Football Club has unfortunately lost too many of its great volunteers in recent times. People that make the club tick, the heart beat of the place. Nobody of this ilk is more sadly missed than Lee Tindale who passed away in February this year. Lee, the Diary scribe, was at the club week in week out for over thirty years and certainly had Warrandyte blood pumping through his veins. He was largely responsible for producing our Club History book. Much of the history coming from articles he himself had written over the years. It doesn't seem the same without Smokey Joe standing on the terrace with pen and pad in hand about to jot down another whimsical headline.
When the Bloods take the field on Sunday wearing black arm bands, they are as much in respect of Wally Cornhill as they are for Lee Tindale and Warrandyte's other great clubmen that have gone before us. Without them we would not have the opportunity to write our own history. As Lee said late in 2005, we are "just passing through".

Bloods in Big One! - September 2nd, 2006

Warrandyte defeated The Basin by a solitary point and will play either Whitehorse or The Basin in the 2006 Grand Final, Warrandyte's first since the premiership of 1999.

A focused Warrandyte side headed into the game with a 'nothing to loose mentality' and realised the pressure was on The Basin to make their third grand final in as many years. After the Bears jumped Warrandyte in Round 16, the Bloods were concious to ensure that history didn't repeat itself. A quick centre break and free kick inside The Basin's forward fifty set the scene for numerous free kicks that would be awarded inside the arc. After a couple of early scares and hard knocks Warrandyte settled the better side and purposeful running resulted in a five goal to two quarter and a 13 point lead at the break. The Basin were dominating the centre clearances however constant pressure and a tight backline turned defence into attack and the Warrandyte forwards capatlised on their opportunities with straight kicking. It was a fast paced game with good skills and ball movement keeping the large pro-Warrandyte crowd entertained. Skipper Matt Wood was taken high and forced from the field not to return. This lifted the pyhsicality of the game which the Bloods relished and extended their lead after the break to 31 points which was reduced to 25 points at the last change. A lead that should of been more had the conversion been better; 3 goals 7 to The Basin's 3.1. Coach Peter Green praised Warrandyte's intensity and work rate, emploring them to sustain the pressure for another 30 minutes. It had been a great game and the last quarter would provide further drama. The Basin held posession for the first half of the quarter having numerous shots and eventually taking the lead for the first time since the opening minutes courtesy of a Anderson free kick with minutes remaining. The Bloods fought back to level scores through a Morello screamer and resulting behind and then hit the front with a Quinlan snap which was touched by a teammate on the goal line. A spectacular mark by Mullet-Treloar from the kick out gave the Bloods a chance to control the tempo and hang on to win by a solitary point. A jubilant Warrandyte crowd ran onto the field to celebrate with the players as a dispodent Basin group headed for the rooms. After singing the song Green addressed his troops in a closed session. Apart from Matt Wood, who will be available, there were no serious injuries sustained.

Wally Cornhill - August 29th, 2006

It is with sadness that we inform you of Walter Cornhills passing on Tuesday. Wally, a Life Member, was one of Warrandyte Football Club's great clubmen and took on many roles during his time including the Presidency for seven years during the 50s & 60s. Our thoughts are with Margaret and family.

Under 18s Advance - August 27th, 2006 - By Brad Valentine

The stage was set for an enthralling game as our opponents Whitehorse had played top team The Basin in their last encounter and only lost by 8 points and had been 30 points up at ¾ time. On a rare occasion, almost all players were available for selection, and as it was the decision would be left until the last minute. The atmosphere in the rooms before the game was of excitement and passion. The team meeting at 8.30 provided an insight as to how the boys would play. All players minds were on as you could see that “eye of the tiger” look in their eyes. Finally the warm up had concluded and the boys steamed onto the ground. The young bloods were eager to get on the board early, and Chris Mac led the way in his return game. His attack on the ball, along with that of local cult figure “Tom Wells” was ferocious, ensuring the team was quick to settle. This quarter was to see some great marking in defence from Oliver Mock, as he was able to repel many Whitehorse attacks. Some great team play saw the bloods leading 4.5 29 to 1.0 6. The second quarter was equally enthralling with forward Luke Dunn getting on top of his opponent and Brendan Zach having a fantastic game at Centre Half Forward assisting in great team passages. The game was looking in Warrandyte’s capable hands on top in most positions across the ground. The second half would see the game go up a level. The bloods had a healthy lead of 32 points at the main break though Whitehorse found some holes in the Warrandyte defence early in the 3rd quarter and were able to capitalize and kick 5 goals in the 3rd term. However Warrandyte’s attack did not wane kicking seven goals of their own. This was to be a great quarter of football for both teams. At the final break Warrandyte led 14.11 95 to 8.1 49. Again the last quarter was similar to that of the 3rd term, with many goals kicked. Early on it was goal for goal, as Whitehorse desperately tried to claw their way back in. Warrandyte were still able to score goals and when Tully Greve passed from a tight angle to Yaaren Bektash in front, who then goaled, the game was over. The Bloods live to fight another day, and will meet Forest Hill in the preliminary final on Sunday 3rd September at 9.40am.

In sights not seen before at Walker Park, and not since the days of Mark "Jacko" Jackson has anyone seen the celebrations of goal sneak Rick "The Glove" Curtis. When the Glove drilled a goal from the boundary line late in the 3rd quarter, the celebration to follow was a thrill in itself. The team lapped up the excitement, as it had done the previous week when Daniel Wilson kicked a sensational goal. The bloods will need this excitement and enthusiasm to carry through in the following weeks, if they are to continue there winning run.

Semi Final Preview   (Seniors) - August 23rd, 2006

Warrandyte will head into this weekends Second Semi-Final with almost a full compliment of players. The Bloods have used 37 players in the Senior side this season, four of which are Under 18s. So there will be some headaches come selection this Thursday night and realistically there are 26 players who have laid strong claims for a chance to play in the Semi. Warrandyte’s last finals appearance was on that dreadful day in 2003 where both sides could only manage one goal to three quarter time and eventual premiers Norwood won on the coldest day for many a year. Delving further back into history was of course the 1993 and 1999 premierships of which there are three current players that hope to again experience premiership glory. Knitted with experience gained at other clubs and our youthful exuberance the team is placed well to enjoy a successful finals campaign.

Our opponent this week, The Basin, have contested the last two Grand Finals and have been touted as premiership favourites all season. A mantle that appears to still be with them. Warrandyte and The Basin have a long history and the late Diary editor, Lee Tindale, would always refer to them as ‘the old enemy’. From memory the last finals clash between the two sides was the 1993 Semi-Final in which the Bloods reigned supreme. However 2006 is a new canvas for the current band of players to etch their own piece of history.

Head to head results this season is one apiece. Round 7 in dry conditions at Warrandyte the Bloods prevailed by four goals. Going into the match without ruckmen Craig Dick and onballers Naughtin and Eyre it was surprising to see Warrandyte dominate the centre clearances. Both sides lost key forwards to injury in a fast paced opening quarter before settling down into a rhythm. The Basin enjoyed good run from the backline however when Warrandyte applied pressure the run dried up and turnovers increased dramatically. Morello was on top all day finishing with 10 goals, several from strong pack marks.

Round 16 was played in contrasting conditions. The Basins Batterham Reserve had been closed due to poor conditions and Miller Park was adopted as their new home. Unfortunately this wasn’t in great condition either. Kicking with the wind, downhill, a dry ball and some explosive well worked play the Bears kicked 46 to zero in the opening quarter. A dominant Mitchell was proving to be handful for Warrandyte's backmen who certainly missed Ash Grybas. Warrandyte were certainly competitive for the remaining three quarters reducing the margin to five goals before The Basin kicked three late goals. A lesson in preparation was taken from the game that has seen the Bloods kick 15 goals in the two first quarters played since.

Mitcham’s Walker Park has been a happy hunting ground for the Yarrasiders in days gone by. The wings are somewhat wider but generally speaking the oval is similar to Warrandyte’s home ground. Always in good condition it should certainly suit the running play and pace of a young, fit side whilst providing plenty of space for the forwards. We hope to see the Warrandyte faithful out in force this Saturday to cheer the Mighty Bloods into the big one!

Is this the end? - August 19th, 2006

Its not the first time club stalwart Terry Ryan has hung up the boots but one has the feeling it could be the last. Ryno played his first game for Warrandyte in 1990 and 17 years later has amassed 200 games for the Bloods. A great player in both Senior and Reserve grades but more importantly a great clubman. Team Manager, Committeeman, kitchen hand, barman, you name it and Terry would of done it. The Ryan name is synonimous with Warrandyte Football Club and we are sure Terry will continue his hard work around the club. Terry has recently battled an illness which has forced his hand into retirement. A broken hand mind you that he has played with since Round 15! Kicking two goals three against Glen Waverley is perhaps the last time number his number 10 will be worn? Or until we are one short in 2007 at least. Congratulations Terry on a fantastic career with the Bloods.

Double Chance - August 19th, 2006

Round 18 provided an interesting scenario with the Seniors relying on a Whitehorse win over Surrey Park to earn the double chance. Of course a victory over a winless Glen Waverley was also required but that was quickly evident with the Bloods leading 53 to 9 at quarter time. With six changes to the side made on Thursday night it gave some young players an opportunity to put their hand up for finals selection and also a chance for 17 year olds Luke Dunn and Jo O'Mara to experience senior footy. It was very pleasing to see four Under 18's perform well in the side and prove the clubs youth policy was the correct path to take. The game became quite stagnant and at times boring. The Darren Hill show kept the crowd interested at various stages and Magic Morello's quest for the Division Goal Kicking title provided some motivation. Three in the last quarter and seven for the day meant that Morello would finish two ahead of Kilsyth's Darren Jackson. He would surely be a big show for the Under 21 Player of the Year.
News soon filtered through that Whitehorse had defeated Surrey Park and Warrandyte had finished second earning the double chance and a shot at The Basin in the 2nd Semi-Final.

Warrandyte   13.15-93
Surrey Park      8.5-53

Goal Kickers:    Morello 7, Evans, McAdam, Ebzery, Holman, Dunn 2, Gordon, Wood, Haskings, O'Mara
Best Players:    Wood, Haskings, Eyre, Evans, Ebzery, Morello

Reserve's - by David Young

With the finals carrot still dangling tantalizingly close to our noses, Round 18 at Glen Waverley provided a simple scenario – win, and rely on another result falling our way. In one of the poorer performances of the season, we managed to account for the home team by 33 points, but our efforts barely resembled a team hoping to play finals. Still, despite our average day, and a moronic Glen Waverley water boy, our job was done. And whilst we lived up to our side of the bargain, unfortunately, we didn’t receive any help from either Whitehorse or Eastern Lions, and missed out on finals action by half a game. Most players went in and out of the game, with only Lynx, Donners, and Red Rick performing well all day. Beefcake Boyce, Ridds, Mocky, and Dirty Sanchez (aka Senor Spielbergo), were all steady contributors.
Good luck to both the 18,s and Seniors in their quest to bring home a flag. Everyone involved in the Reserves is of course, right behind them.

Finals Form - August 12th, 2006

After a disappointing start and result to last weeks game the team applied itself at training and on match day to ensure the tables were turned on Surrey Park. And turned they were. After conceeding 7-4 to nil against The Basin, Warrandyte kicked 7-7 to no score against second placed Surrey Park in an awesome display of running, attacking football. Craig Dick and Tom Naughtin, who missed the Round 8 clash, dominated the centre bounces to give Eyre, Wood, Davey and Holman first use and space to deliver accurately to the forward line. Whilst Morello and Evans kicked goals they also squandered several opportunities that probably should have been converted. The back six had a new line up and provided the run that had been missing over recent weeks. Treeby goaled after a creative passage of play from the back pocket, Green kicked two and wingman Aidan Davey with 16 posessions in the first quarter was also on the board. The only negative in the opening was Ben Reid who left the field with a suspect left hand. The Bloods continued their dominating display in the second quarter kicking the first three goals to leed by 68 points. Surrey Park had several forays into their attacking fifty and finally kicked a goal midway through the term. This was shortly followed by two further goals both from 25 metre penalties. At the half-time siren the Bloods enjoyed a 48 point lead which can largely be attributed to the work rate of the midfield. The second half provided more of a contest at ground level as Surrey increased their numbers at the ball and Warrandyte could not find forward targets at will as was the case in the face paced opening. Two straight forward shots at goal were missed and although outscoring the Panthers Warrandyte would of liked to extend the lead by a greater margin. Early in the last term Holman left the field injured and Naughtin forced from the ground after a high but clean hip and shoulder, left the Yarrasiders without a bench. Surrey Park kicked the first of the quarter and a further two in junk time to reduce the final margin to 40 points. It would of been icing on the Warrandyte cake to bury Surrey Park, however the hard work was done in the first half and the large contingent of Bloods supporters left satisfied that we were still on track for September glory.

Warrandyte   13.15-93
Surrey Park      8.5-53

Goal Kickers:    Green, Morello, Evans 2, Gordon, Quinlan, Treeby, Wood, Naughtin, Davey, Holman.
Best Players:    Davey, Eyre, Templeton, McAdam, Dick, Wood.

Reserve's - by David Young

The Reserves went into this week with finals aspirations a slim possibility. To remain in contention they would have to beat their more fancied opposition and hope other results would go their way. In arguably the teams best performance of the year the Bloods slowly eased away from the Panthers with senior experienced players Elliott, Lincoln, Bourke, Boyce and Haskings showing the way and putting up their hands for a Ones recall. In the dry conditions the ball use was fantastic and against their bigger opposition Warrandyte followed David Young's instructions to run the ball. As confidence grew the midfield took on the Panthers, Elliott and Boyce in particular were unstoppable. Ryan Parker's attack on the ball and man when required inspired his team mates who on the rebound looked like a side that should be featuring in September action. The club now has to defeat Glen Waverley Hawks and hope that either Surrey Park or Forrest Hill lose to play finals footy alongside the Seniors and Colts.

Warrandyte    16.9-105
Surrey Park    11.8-74

Goal Kickers:    Elliott 5, Young, Pidgeon 2, Jenkins, Lincoln, Ryan, Riddell, Zach,Haskings, Opteynde, Parker.
Best Players:    Boyce, Elliott, Haskings, Bourke, Lincoln, Giampietro.

Basin Sink Bloods - August 5th, 2006

In the wash up it would be apparent that The Basin had set themselves for this game nine weeks ago. As outlined in Shaun Kelly's wrap up below, Coach Brett Hartman reminded his team of the four goal defeat Warrandyte inflicted on the Bears in Round 7 when they listened to the Bloods belt out the club song. Although the game was moved from the unplayable Batterham Reserve to a somewhat neutral heavy ground, revenge for The Basin was to be exacted in the first quarter when they kicked 7-4 to no score. Albeit downhill, with the breeze and a new football that seemed to float The Bains way, a shell shocked Warrandyte went into the huddle as 21 individuals looking for guidence from the coaching staff. The magnets were shuffled, orders of accountability instilled and reaffirmation of the game plan given which saw the Bloods steady before slowly reducing the 46 point margin keeping The Basin scoreless in the second term. A dominant Mitchell was proving to be handful for Warrandyte's backmen who certainly missed Ash Grybas. However the armwrestled continued in very ordinary conditions and the Bloods were more than matching it with their more fancied opponents. Overhauling the 36 point defecit at the final break was always going to be a big ask and although Evans slotted the first major of the quarter it was again a slog battled out on ground level. As players grew weary The Basin managed three late goals through persistence and some relaxed manning up. The final margin of 51 points was basically that of quarter time which exemplified the importance of being mentally prepared and ready to play. Rick Templeton was outstanding in his role on Hartman, Holman continued his outstanding form and it is offical that Dion Mullett Treloar is a utility. Ben Reid continued his form infront of the big sticks and Matt Treeby was heard to say "it must of been a bloody big jam tin". We can now look forward to exacting our own revenge on Surrey Park. Round 8 was undoubtedly our most dissapointing performance of the season and the players are keen to make-a-mends. With the return of Morello, Grybas coming back through the Reserves and Dick hitting his straps the next two weeks will shape our finals campaign.

The Basin started in sensational fashion, with Rod Mitchell, who had started at full-forward with Bloods defender Michael Stewart at his side, kicked the opening goal of the contest inside the first minute. Mitchell proceeded to help himself to three more opening quarter goals as the Bears put the game out of Warrandyte's reach early, netting seven opening-quarter goals whilst holding the Bloods, completely scoreless. The bloods were not helped by the fact they were without their Division Four leading goalkicker, Michael Morello, for the second consecutive week due to an achilles injury.
It seemed The Basin could do no wrong early - Sean Ellis was giving the Bears midfielders an armchair ride in dominating the ruck stoppages, Matt Smith and Luke Anderson were rebounding well from half-back, Josh Lee and Josh Best were stockpiling a mountain of possessions, and Mitchell was giving them a huge target to kick to up forward. As Hartman acknowleged after the game. "Rocket (Mitchell) is a big boy, he leads straight and he's pretty hard to stop one-out", commented Hartman. "We tell the boys if we can move it down quickly to him and get him one-out, he normally does the job for us."
Warrandyte seemed stunned by the Bears' opening term outburst, and at quarter time, coach Peter Green demanded more attacking football from his players, asking them to "attack at all costs" in the second quarter. It was a much more determined Bloods combination that came out after half-time, and they kicked the only two goals of the second quarter, through Grant McAdam, who had the unenviable job of minding Matt Smith, and captain Matt Wood, to bring the Bloods back into the contest. Entering the main break Warrandyte were trailing by just thirty-one points after keeping The Basin to just one behind for the quarter.
The match took a while to find its groove in the heavy conditions at Miller Park after half-time, with all the sizzle of the opening quarter long forgotten, and replaced by possession football. It wasn't until some thirteen minutes had passed before a goal was kicked, and it was Mitchell who marked between two Bloods defenders to register his fifth goal for the day. He didn't take long to register his sixth goal, with the resultant centre clearance finding Mitchell on the lead. When Andrew Cowlishaw swung his foot at a stationery ball at ground level which sailed through for his opening goal, it was almost a case of how far the Bears, but Warrandyte hit back with two late goals to go into the final change thirty-six points in arrears.
Hartman was quite vocal in The Basin's huddle at three-quarter time, reminding his players of their motto for the day. "We've got 30 minutes for 21 blokes to pay them back. We're going to show them (this quarter) that we're the number one contender this year. Whatever it takes today, we come off here and we win the game." Whilst Bloods big man Lee Evans kicked the first goal of the quarter, giving Warrandyte a sniff of an unlikely victory, the Bears then moved into gear, kicking the last three goals of the day to record a 51 point victory - ensuring The Basin an appointment at Walker Park in Mitcham on second semi-final day in three short weeks.
You could tell the victory meant a lot to The Basin, as they belted out their victory song with extra fervour, a fact that wasn't lost on their coach. "We set ourselves for this game, it was our game and we wanted badly to win it", commented Hartman after the game. "We set ourselves a goal nine weeks ago, and the number one goal was to knock Warrandyte off. We came out breathing fire, and showed just what sort of side we are when we put it together. We decided today was the payback, we owed them. When they sung the song (in Round 7) after our first defeat for the year it really hurt the boys, they learnt a lot and you could really see the hurt in their eyes, and we really wanted to give it to them today".
With just two weeks before finals, and their berth now secured, Hartman allowed himself the luxury of thinking a couple of weeks ahead after such an important win, but at the same time remaining focused on next week's assignment against the finals-bound Whitehorse Pioneers. "We're looking forward to finals now, we know today we could set our season up and we can't lose the double chance now, we know we're going to a second semi final. We've got a couple of blokes who pulled up a bit sore, but we're not going to take Whitehorse easy next week, they're still definitely a finals contender and we need to get over the line again next week."
Payback Day was a huge day for The Basin Football Club. They righted the wrongs of earlier in the season, and set themselves up for a tilt at the Division Four premiership that has eluded them for the last few seasons. Could it be, that after several years of heartbreak, 2006 is the year that The Basin finally announce themselves to the footballing public as the real deal by moving out of Division Four? Only time will tell.

Reserve's - by David Young

Warrandyte Reserves appear to have let a finals berth slip with three narrow losses in a row, and it will take a minor miracle to get back into the four. They are in fifth position on the ladder, one game behind fourth, and will need to win the remaining two games and rely on Surrey Park going down to Whitehorse Pioneers in the last game of the season.
It was a gut wrenching loss to top side The Basin on Saturday, a low scoring game that went right down to the wire. Leigh Giampetro dominated across the half-back line, and the heavy conditions suited the pace of Ryan Parker who assisted in defence and Patrick Hernandez who was solid as a rock at full back. It was a battle of the backlines, and each team had only scored one goal at three quarter time.
The Bloods were in front after an amazing snap from Jimmy Riddell in the last five minutes of the game spun over his shoulder and through the goals on a tight angle. There were many other opportunities to score a major in the last few minutes, but each time The Basin were able to clear the ball. The opposition finally took it up into their forward line, and with a kick off the ground the ball landed in the mud on the goal line and was rushed through by Jamie ‘Princess’ Ellis, but was awarded a goal after some discussion between the young goal umpire from The Basin and the central umpire. It’s a great pity that the result for a whole season of effort by so many players can come down to a game decided by less than a kick. “We lost the game rather than The Basin winning it. Our decision-making let us down, and we made some crucial mistakes which you can’t afford in such a low scoring game,” said a disappointed coach David Young after he had cooled down following the tight last quarter. “Hopefully the players will learn from their mistakes and come back better and more experienced next season.”

Under 18's - by Brad Valentine

The scene was set for a top of the table clash with Warrandyte 3rd placed taking on The Basin 1st placed. With an inspired team performance the previous week, Warrandyte were a good chance of causing an upset and heading into the finals with great confidence. Unfortunately this was not to unfold. Again Warrandyte was only able to field a team with 18 players (due to injury and school commitments), and it was going to take an enormous effort to pull off a victory. The buzz in the rooms prior to the game was no-where near the excitement of the previous week, and this showed on the ground as The Basin kicked away to 5 goal lead at quarter time. With the ground conditions being very poor it was always going to be difficult to fight back. In what was to be a scrappy affair, The Basin adjusted to the conditions a lot better than their Warrandyte counterparts. Although we continued to fight all day there was to be no miracle victory. With players unable to come off when tired as there was no bench to replace them, they valiantly stayed out on the ground and performed admirably. With the continued great form of Chris Watson and Jake Radcliff, along with great efforts from Matt Dunn and Nick Meade, this was not enough to see Warrandyte challenging the competition leaders. It was also good to see some other players coming back into form, such as Daniel Large and Ryan Campbell. Paul Burgoyne, Rick "Glove" Curtis and Tim Beasley tried hard all day, but the day was to end with a loss the final scores reading The Basin 13-10 to Warrandyte 3-7. With the return of a few key players from school and injury can only strengthen the side as they make their way into the finals. With 3rd spot sewn up, Warrandyte will face either Kilsyth or Whitehorse Pioneers in the cut throat semi final at Mitcham (Walker Park) on the Sunday 27th of August at 9.40am. Every little bit of support counts and it would be good to help the local under 18's if we could get as many supporters there as possible. Come along and cheer for the ride is sure to be exciting as the under 18's look for premiership glory.

The Basin   13.10 - 88
Warrandyte   3.7 - 25

Lock us in thanks Ed. - July 29th, 2006

Although finals were pretty much a formality, Saturday's win over Kilsyth has locked us in. Now we continue to play for the double chance.
Heading into the match against the Cougars without Morello was looked as a positive for the forwardline. A chance to step up with the focus taken away from Magic, and step up they did. Holland crashed packs, held his grabs and kicked well, whilst young Lee Evans continued on his merry way taking marks at will and slotting four goals (three behinds) on his way to a best on ground performance. Brought up from the backline, Logan provided another avenue to goal as did Sugars McAdam who finished with two. Onballers Wood, Reid and Holman chimed in for singles and Josh Eyre could of easily had three to his name if able to convert. With 28 scoring shots on a boggin ground, the question of firepower up forward without Morello has certainly been answered in the positive.
Kicking with the wind in the first quarter the Bloods again managed to get off to a good start kicking five goals to Kilsyth's one. The Cougar's played a loose man in defense however for the most part, he played too far behind the ball. With Dick back in the side and Naughtin finding form our run has returned at the right time of year. Perhaps at times a little stagnant at the ball ups, the midfield were rarely beaten in a stop start game. The backline held up well against the wind in the second quarter keeping Kilsyth to one goal as Warrandyte extended the lead to 29 points. 5.4 to three straight in the third term put the game beyond doubt and the Bloods were in a position to finally bury a side. To Kilsyth's credit they fought the game out and stuck with Warrandyte in the final term to keep the margin to 50 points. A good lead up for some tough games in the fortnight ahead against The Basin and Surrey Park. It was great to see the return of Dale Vitiritti and Chris 'Boot' Quinlan to the senior lineup. Both performed their roles well as usual and their finals experience will be a valuable asset to the side.

Warrandyte 14.14 - 98
Kilsyth 7.6 - 48

Goal Kickers: Evans 4, Holland 3, McAdam 2, Logan, Reid, Wood, Ebzery, Holman.
Best Players: Evans, Naughtin, Dick, Logan, Ebzery, Holman.

Reserve's - by David Young

Things returned to normal for the Reserves against Kilsyth, with Geoff Zach being knocked out early on in the game and wanting to keep playing despite not knowing what day of the week it was. In the end, losing Zachy and Alfy (groin) early on hurt our chances as it limited our options across the ground, and forced our on-ballers to spend large amounts of time chasing the pill. This, coupled with some inconsistent umpiring and a couple of minutes of 3rd quarter madness from our defenders, meant we were always playing catch-up. Resultantly, despite the best efforts of all, we couldn’t quite go with Kilsyth and went down by a couple of goals. Another big effort by DJ Cal should again have him pushing for a one’s spot, as he took out both the players award and Best on Ground. Others to feature in the votes were The Drake, Pauly O, Red Rick, Lynx, and Dirty Sanchez.

Warrandyte 11.6 - 72
Kilsyth 12.12 - 84

Under 18's - by Brad Curtis

With the finals approaching a team meeting held prior to the game was crucial to the success that would follow. The meeting lasted an hour and areas of improvement were suggested and the team made a commitment to each other to improve on certain areas of their game. When the day finally came, it was Warrandyte 3rd placed hosting final aspirants Kilsyth who were 4th placed. It was bound to be a crucial game as Warrandyte were missing a few key players through injury, and only able to field 18 players. With captain Joe O'Mara failing to win the toss again, the team was kicking against a 4-5 goal breeze. But the build up in the rooms prior to the game was as good as ever seen. Usually quiet players were encouraging team mates, and the enthusiasm and intense concentration was obvious to all. It was no surprise to see Warrandyte attacking the entire first quarter and kicking 5-4 to 1-2 into the wind. This was the best quarter of football for the year, and a sign of things to come. In the second quarter Warrandyte came out strongly again kicking 3 goals to 1. Again kicking into the breeze, Warrandyte sensed the challenged and kicked 5 goals to 3 to take an 8 goal lead at 3/4 time. The challenge was set to kick another 7 goals in the final term, and finish kicking 20 goals for the game. As they had done in the previous quarters Warrandyte came out and dominated the final stanza, reaching the target and going on to record a 100 point victory. Tom Dlabik in his return game from injury was sensational and Luke Dunn up forward was unstoppable, kicking 7 goals. With Joe O'Mara, Jake Radcliff and Chris Watson dominating in the middle of the ground, there was plenty of attacking thrusts into the Warrandyte forward line. When reliable defender Oliver Mock was sent forward, he showed great versatility kicking 2 goals. With Steve Lockie relishing his new role in defence, a good return from Nick Meade and Tully Grieve along with an inspired performance from Callum Fulton, the bloods look set for an exciting final series.

Man O Man - July 22nd, 2006

The tension was building all week and as the ladies filed into social rooms our competitors were quickly feeding their dutch courage. Colts entrants Zachy and Yazza were the first acts with Back Street Bektash swooning the crowd. Favourite Sugars McAdam got the party going with his rendition of Lionel Ritchies Dancing on the Ceiling before Evo stepped up and Killer gave his best Phil Collins impersonation. Tinman Stewart performed George Harrisons 'Got My Mind Set on You' followed by AJ Eyre with a Jet classic. Zach was first to be voted out but used his time well to begin his seduction. The question of 'where is He-Man now' was answered when the hired entertainment arrived. Unfortunately since the battle of Castle Greyskull has been won, He-Man has let himself go. A quick work over before the body building segment that would separated the men from the boys and after going one on one with the ladies we were down to three - Back Street Bektash, Tinman and Sugars. A dance off would see the final votes cast and Sugars crowned Man O Man Champion for 2006 by just two votes. And to the victor, the spoils!
Thanks go out to organiser Sarah 'Toots' Barclay, MC Grybas, DJ Calzone our topless waiters and contestants.

Hung, Drawn & Quartered - July 22nd, 2006

The build wasn't out of the ordinary and focus wained at times during the prematch which indicated another slow start was on the cards. Quite the opposite was the reality when the Bloods kicked the first seven goals of the game and leave Forest Hill behind with quick ball movement and willingness to run. Reid and McAdam showed good early form kicking two each. How fortunes would change in the second quarter with the Zebras kicking 5.6 to 1.2 and leave a complacent Warrandyte second to the ball. Simon Ryan was giving Forest Hill plenty of drive from the grandstand wing and played a big part in several goals. It was certainly to be a game of quarters with 21 of 23 goals kicked to the Springvale Road end. The Bloods stepped up a gear around the ground although could not find a dominating target up forward. Green used his experience in front of goal to milk two majors and Logan snapped truly to take the lead out to 42. Forest Hill kicked the last goal of the third term to trail by 34 points. Morello was sidelined with injury as was Holman which deprived the forwards of the usual pinpoint delivery from his boot.
It was an even start to the final quarter with neither team dictating the play. Forest Hill pegged back two goals and with only six minutes left appeared to have left their run too late. However some quick centre learances and selfish play from Warrandyte saw the margin reduced to six points with two minutes remaining and then scores were levelled with 30 seconds to go. Neither side could manage another score and a draw was the result. It was certainly looked upon as a loss for Warrandyte who could of been sitting equal second with Surrey Park. Credit must go to Forest Hill who took advantage of a Warrandyte side lacking concentration and the ability to finish sides off. The rabies like spray from Green at half time paled into insignificance when compared to the aftermatch slaying. The player's committment and work ethic was rightfully questioned and the swear jar will be rightfully filled. There are too many 'golfers' at the club who don't currently understand the effort required to win finals football.
How costly will the point awarded against Treeby be in the run home?

Winter Footy Is Back! - July 15th, 2006

Solid rain for the 24 hours preceeding Warrandyte's Round 13 clash against Ferntree Gully had taken its toll on the oval. After the Colts and reserves had finished the state of the ground resembled that of the eighties. Wet and biggy conditions are a great leveller and Gully were a realistic chance of causing an upset.
In front of a small crowd, it was clear from the outset the ball would spend a lot of time on the deck and constant rain made overhead marking difficult. The Eagles had more of the play in the opening quarter hacking the ball forward at all costs. Warrandyte slowly adjusted to the conditions and managed the first major of the game nearing quarter time. When play resumed, Ferntree Gully again had more of the ball, which by now was like soap, and after several rushed shots on goal managed to kick truly after a dubious free kick. A frustrated Warrandyte increased their work rate and attack at the ball which resulted in two goals from the boot of Naughtin and Green. Another doubtful free kick in Gully's forward line right on half time was not converted and the Bloods led 23 to 14.
The third term saw a more determined Warrandyte side ease away from Ferntree Gully kicking 2.3 to no score with Lee Evans and Grant McAdam handling the sodden ball well across half forward. The lead stretched to 40 points by the final siren, Morello and Holland helping Warrandyte score 2.5 to one point in the last quarter.
Best: Evans, Mullet-Treloar, Naughtin, Reid and McAdam

Oh the joy of winter football in Melbourne. The rain, the cold, and the 6 inches of mud on just about every part of Warrandyte Reserve. Fortunately, the players didn’t see this as any reason not to give their all against Ferntree Gully, and as a result, a comfortable 64 point win was the prize from an otherwise bleak day. Despite the ordinary weather, the first quarter was of a very high standard. Skills were good, play was direct, and goals came quite easily. As the day went on, and the ball got heavier and heavier, the game more closely resembled an under 12’s game, with packs of players following the ball through the mud and looking forward to the warmth of the showers. Plenty of players worked hard in the tough conditions, with the big blokes doing surprisingly well. Jarvo, Dirty Sanchez, Boot, and J Mac controlled the air, whilst DJ Cal, Leigh G, Red Rick, and Alfy provided the run. Prangers dominated up forward and took home the players award, with J Mac getting the nod for Best on Ground.

Dirty Girls! - July 15th, 2006

After constant rain and three games during the day conditions were perfect, in the girls eyes, to play their Annual Charity Match. Considering the weather, a good crowd turned out to see Warrandyte take on Eastern Gully Lions for the second year. Revenge was on the cards but the Lions dominated early and kicked away to a three goal lead. The Bloodettes who had only one training session started to come together and soon pegged back the margin with the aid of some additional players! Eastern Lions kicked the sealer shortly after our first streaker and in sync with the final siren a mud fight broke out and coach Tom Naughtin was dumped in the slop. 24 dirty girls gave it their all for charity, namely the Cancer Council of Victoria and North Warrandyte CFA. The club would like to thank all of you who supported the event and donated your time and money to two worthy casues. This includes Eastern Gully Lions, coaches Tom Naughtin and James Bowen, Rick Bourke and the players themselves!

Call-A-Plumber Cup - July 8th, 2006

It had rained heavily for most of the week and reports of an already choppy ground at Kimberley Reserve had the elder statesmen licking their lips in anticipation. Unfortunately there aren't too many that can remember the muddy days of yesteryear and after a poor performance the previous week it was a danger game against an improved Chirnside Park.
As usual Warrandyte were slow out of the blocks and let the Panthers get out to an early lead. A dangerous position given the conditions would only degenerate. Craig Dick, who has been absent for the majority of '06, was moved into the ruck with instant success and the Bloods pegged one back to be 16 points adrift at quarter time. Thankfully the second term saw more accountability, an improved work rate and greater attack at the ball. Aided by a steady breeze the downfall was again conversion, kicking four goals six behinds to two goals one. The third quarter saw both teams slug it out on ground level with neither gaining the ascendency. Ben Reid's attack on the ball was relentless and should of been inspirational, unfortunately too few matched his desire. With scores level at the last change and the breeze still steady and in Warrandyte's favour, there was perhaps some complacency among the ranks. A big mistake in these conditions and Chirnside crept out to a 13 point lead with 15 minutes to go. Finally Warrandyte were jolted into action and moved the ball forward with purpose but were unable to finish off the good work. Ezbery snuck one home after a strong mark to move within three points and had the chance to put the Bloods in front from the square if he could pick the ball up from the mud. When Morello missed a set shot and Elliott sprayed one runnung into an open goal our fate seemed sealed with four minutes remaining. Enter one Peter Green who at the end of a string of handpasses shrugged off one tackle, evaded another before straightening and kicking truly from twenty out. In front by five points, there was still work to be done and nervous final minute in front of Chirnside Park's goal saw the backline at their desperate best. A rushed behind would be the last score of the match and a close four point Warrandyte victory the result. Chirnside Park played well in an entertaining game that could of gone either way.
Ben Reid was clearly best on ground with Wood, Naughtin and Davey also showing their class. Gordon responded well to his challenges and Mullet-Treloar continues to impress in his debut season.

Chirnside Park 8.12 - 60
Warrandyte 8.16 - 64

Reserves

Despite thrashing Chirnside Park by 97 points first time around, Round 12 presented the Reserves with their biggest challenge for the year so far. The Panthers were in as good a form as any team in the competition, and a win away from home would set up our run to the finals. A fantastic start set the tone, but a customary lapse in the second quarter found us trailing the home side just before half time. A Jamie Ellis goal after the siren wrestled back the lead and some momentum. The 3rd quarter was a great contest, with Chirnside Park playing very well early, only to be overrun as the Warrandyte runners started to control the tempo of the game. The last quarter saw that pattern continue as the lead stretched to 4 goals, only a couple of late ones making the final margin 12 points.
Jamie Ellis was voted the players best, with Dale Vittiriti, Cal Haskings, Josh Eyre (coming back from suspension), and Rick Bourke also prominent.

Under 18's - by Brad Curtis

In muddy conditions the boys completely dominated the first half, but could not bury the opposition. A five goal burst in the third quarter and a four goal last quarter put the game beyond doubt, and confirmed Warrandyte as a premiership prospect, with The Basin in top position on the ladder.

Chirnside Park 6.10 - 46
Warrandyte 14.12 - 96

Best Players: O'Mara, Beasley, Watson, MacDougal, Burgoyne, Dunn. Rare Home Loss - July 1st, 2006

Round 2 saw Whitehorse touch us up by ten goals in a poor performance that the players knew was far from our best. Despite losing key bigmen Craig Dick and Mick Stewart before the match, the team was confident of a victory. Aided by a strong breeze Whitehorse got the jump and skipped away to an early lead. It was apparent very early that the Pioneers would dominate in the ruck and in turn centre clearances. The umpires were quick to pay free kicks against the Warrandyte backline who were under constant pressure and were to be later commended on their performance. Although having more of the ball in the second term the Bloods were unable to apply scoreboard pressure and it was in fact Whitehorse who strecthed their lead going into the main break. The third term was extremely important to not only stay in touch but outscore Whitehorse who were kicking with the wind. Morello was again being double and triple teamed which freed up Ezbery, Evans and Gordon as avenues to goal. A four goal to two premiership quarter had the Bloods within a kick and the feeling was good at three quarter time. Whitehorse had three quick clearances from the centre bounce and capatalised from each to take the ascendency. It had been the story of the day which Warrandyte could not answer. A goal to Elliott kept us in touch but to be honest never really threatened to bridge the 4 goal deficit and we suffered our first loss at home since July 2005. Although soundly beaten at stoppages the midfiled were all named in the Bloods best and Morello added three goals to take his season tally to 65.

After a slow first half against Whitehorse the young bloods finally kicked in to gear to score a sold win. Only leading by ten points at the main break, the start of the 3rd was what we wanted with five goals in about five minutes to blow the game apart then anonther two later in the quarter to lead 10.9 to 4.5. The final term saw good team football get us back on the winning way after a month with only 1 game of football. Nick and Jake had days out with up about 100 kicks between them, Ryan was attacking from defence and then a goal kicker when moved up forward. Scott was like a wall not letting anything through Macca, Hammer, Mitch Watto and Jesse also had good games. All players did well all contributing when it was needed.

Warrandyte Oak - July 1st, 2006

This weeks game against Whitehorse Pioneers marks a personal milestone for club legend Matthew Wood who plays his 100th game for the Bloods. Coerced to Warrandyte in 2001 by friend Chris Cornell, Matt made an immediate impression winning the first of his three Best & Fairests for the club. Woody was given his witty nickname and settled in at Warrandyte who he has vowed to finish his career with. A career that has seen him play for the Northern (Preston) Knights and Carlton before a stint in the Diamond Valley 1st Division. Woody has enjoyed a stellar career at the Bloods finishing in the Best & Fairest top three each season and winning the award in 2001, 2004 and 2005. Pundits would suggest that a fourth is well on the way. Woody also fared well in the league voting finishing fourth in 2005 even with the team only managing two wins for the season. He is determined to make a mends for the disappointing 2004 finals campaign and hopes to lead Warrandyte back to Division 3. The club congratulates Matt on his 100th game and is indebted for his outstanding contribution on and off the field.

Sharp Shooters - June 26th, 2006

With 10 rounds being played in Season 2006, Warrandyte finds itself with the three leading goalkickers in each grade. The much publicised goal kicking prowess of Magic Hands Morello has taken a back seat to reserve's sharp shooter Campbell Holland and Colt Luke Dunn. Holland has recently been moved forward from the backline to capatalise on good midfield delivery. The successful magnet shuffle has resulted in Holland kicking 23 goals in three weeks, including a haul off 11, to net 27 for the season and sit five goals clear on the league table.
Dunn and Gleeson of Forest Hill are battling for the under 18 competition honours. After kicking seven against Glen Waverley Dunn is leading the table on 27 goals from seven matches.
And of course Morello is experiencing his best year of senior football with 62 goals from ten matches, 17 clear of his closest rival. Magic hands is living up to his self appointed nickname grabbing everything that comes near him even though he is often double and triple teamed. If form continues and Morello can go injury free, the Ron Wilson medal and a century of goals in our centenary year beckons.
It is a joy to watch our full forwards converting the hard work of the backline and midfielders.

"Eastrn Loins"??? - June 24th, 2006

It has been many years since we played at the old Fairpark ground and on arrival we were slightly confused as to exactly which team we were playing as the line marker had proudly painted the grass with a big "Eastrn Loins" message.
The Lions had been in good touch winning their last three and making a mid season bid for finals contention. Although Warrandyte had all of the play, goal kicking was ordinary to say the least and Eastern capatalised on the majority of their opportunities. Not a good ground for full forwards, Morello was forced up the ground to present different avenues to goal. Gordon and Logan stepped up kicking truly, whilst Lee Evans continued his marking prowess in kicking range. Usually a good shot for goal, Lee has had the yips recently kicking three goals 12 in two weeeks. He wasn't the only one and at half time 4.13 played 6.3. Centre clearances were not going our way although Wood and Holman dominated around the ground with the assistance of Reid. The backline settled and gave plenty of drive for Morello and Ezbery who took charge in the third term and kicked an improving Warrandyte into a commanding position. The Bloods kicked the first two goals of the final stanza and the game was played at a lower intencity as a result. With the game beyond doubt Eastern Lions started to pepper the goals and the final margin could of been closer if accurate goal kicking prevailed. Morello left the field with seconds remaining and handed his sixth goal to Flash Gordon after a strong leading mark. McAdam, Reid, Opteynde, Holman and Wood were amongst the best and it was a pleasing return to form for Adian Davey. Warrandyte's underpraised backline also deserves mention for it's continued methodical approach and drive.

Eastern Lions 9.12 - 66
Warrandyte 14.17 - 101

Reserve's

The Reserve's have steadied the ship and continued good form has the season back on track. With some challenging weeks ahead the game against Eastern Lions was a must win. Unfortunately the Lions second 18 were up to their round one tricks with another king hit from behind which is doing nothing for their sides reputation.
Despite the dewy conditions it was a good game early with Warrandyte doing most of the attacking and Eastern Lions rebounding well out of defence. Veteran Dale Vitiritti was outstanding with his attack on the ball and accurate disposal. When Holland left the field with a suspect elbow the avenue to goal seemed to dry up and mixed with wayward kicking the Bloods rued lost opportunities at the first break. The second quarter was played in much the same vein and with Holland back on the field kicking truly a margin of 21 points was managed. 18 scoring shots to 10 probably should have put the game well out of Eastern Lions' reach. With fluctuating fortunes in the second half, Warrandyte maintained a similar margin until the final siren, running out 19 point winners. Holland was again a focal point up forward kicking 6 to lead the reserve's divsion goal kicking. Vitts was best on with Haskings, Boyce, Truno, Donovan and McKellar solid contributors. Knocking on the door of the four only two points from second and a game behind top spot, it is critical that the wins continue and a finals birth for all three sides is likely.

Eastern Lions 8.11 - 59
Warrandyte 11.12 - 78

Under 18's

The Colts had another week off and through match ratio have retained third spot on the ladder. They have had a good break to regroup for this weeks important clash against Whitehorse Pioneers.

469 to 104! - June 17th, 2006

All season we have just 'done enough' and not managed to bury our opposition, often taking the foot off the pedal, especially late in the game. This was a good chance to rectify that against a winless Glen Waverley Hawks. However early on it certainly wasn't the one way traffic that we expected and Glen Waverley took their opportunities when in attack to kick five goals in the first quarter. Unfortunately this wasn't the case for the Bloods with an inaccurate seven goals eight. Still lacking a first class ruckmen the brains trust threw young Mullett-Treloar into the mix and he rose to the challenge jumping over the top of his taller opponents. The contest around the ground was scrappy and goals not as easy to come by for either team in comparison to the first quarter. It wasn't until the third quarter that Warrandyte gained real ascendency moving the ball well and applying pressure to the opposition. Morello was again a focal point, with Wood and Holman also contributing several majors. Lee Evans was getting plenty of the pill in the forward fifty which he was not able to convert. Seven goals to two behinds stretched the lead to 85 points at the last break. Coach Green called for a ten goal last quarter and a boost to our lagging percentage. Another seven was all that could be managed and to the Hawks credit they battled on kicking four of their own with Darren Hill using his size and experience well. Morello's 10 goals moves him to 57 for the season, Wood kicked 6 and Holman 4. They were joined in the best by Reid and Templeton. However it was 17 year old Mullett-Treloar awarded BOG and the Players Award.
Thursday selection will be watched closely with Holland dominating and the anticipated return of Naughtin, Grybas and Dick. It is pleasing to be seven and two at the halfway mark with key players missing for many of our games. It is time to build on the foundation that has been laid and build up to a strong finals campaign.

Warrandyte 26.17 - 173
Glen Waverley 10.6 - 66

Reserve's

They were like two gazelles gracefully and effortlessly bounding around the forwardline, able to twist and turn on a six pence and thread the Sherrin through the eye of a needle.... well perhaps not so gracious and with Holland's late night preparation it was perhaps not a Sherrin he could get through the eye of a needle! Dutchy kicked 11 goals in three quarters taking his tally to 21 from four games in the forwardline and would certainly be pressing for senior selection.

The reserve's mid season slump appears to be behind them with good performances of recent weeks including a 148 point demolision of Glen Waverley Hawks. Whilst the Hawks haven't set the world on fire, it was the way that the Bloods systematically took them apart in the second half that impressed the coaching staff. After a great start kicking 7.3 to 1.2 and linking well around the ground the second quarter was a selfish affair with team work non-existant. David Young obviously delivered a stern half time address as the football played in the third and final quarter was fantastic, linking together and finishing well. Holland capatilised when he made the contest and had constant supply from the young brigade - Naughtin, Boyce, Archie Bourke and Ellis who all featured in the best. It was a fitting send off for club stalwart Travis Brogan who was chaired off the ground after kicking three goals in his final match, hanging up the boots after 172 games with the Bloods.

Warrandyte 26.16 - 172
Glen Waverley 3.6 - 24

Under 18's

It was certainly a day out for the full-forwards on Saturday with 28 goals kicked between the three of them. Luke Dunn got the flags waving with seven majors for the Colts in a comfortable 110 point win over Glen Waverley. The Colts have had injury and availability problems over recent weeks and Super Coach Brad Valentine has had great difficulty in getting a side together. Although Saturday wasn't any different, there were some good ins for the team that certainly aided to a percentage boosting win. I'm not sure how many goals Macca has had kicked on him this season but I doubt it would be any more than five or six. It was an absolute team effort with Watto, Lockie, Mitch, Dunny, Rat, and Macca leading the charge. Six and one at the halfway mark and sitting second on percentage the side can again replenish its stock with a bye before making an assault on the business end of preceedings.

Warrandyte 17.22 - 124
Glen Waverley 1.8 - 14

Thud! - June 3rd, 2006

Those in football circles suggest that 90% of the game is played between the shoulders. Well we hope this is true after an embarrassing performance against Surrey Park. After a high of the previous weeks well fought victory against The Basin, it was suprisingly very flat on the track and during the pre-game warm up. This was soon evident on the paddock as Surrey were first to the ball and had many loose options available. The backline did well to hold up and repell so many inside fifties. Although the margin was only four points at quarter time the Bloods could not manage another goal until mid way through the third quarter. Morello was being double and triple teamed, whilst not unusual, our deliver to him was appalling and played into Surrey's hands. Other forward options were presenting on occasion however our ball carriers could not find them with any effectiveness.
A margin of 54 points at the last change meant that the game was all but over and it was about respectability. Holman and Wood who were solid contributors showed their class in defence and Haskings proved he was a worthy selection for senior footy. Mullett-Treloar and McAdam continued their good form, however as a team it was an unacceptable performance. Morello winning a loose ball, breaking a tackle and strolling into an open goal only to be tackled and penalised summed up the teams mindset and performance. Let's hope it was 'one of those days' that we can be put behind us and ensure it doesn't happen again.

Surrey Park 15.9 - 99
Warrandyte 5.10 - 40

Reserve's

Surrey Parks ground was in great nick and it was a perfect day for football. The Reserve's got off to a flyer winning the ball from the middle and linking well around the ground with fantastic foot skills. Archie Bourke was dominating the half back line and providing plenty of run with Bruno Elliott. The supply to our forward line was plentiful and scoring opportunites came from several marking contests. Unfortunately our forwards looked a little sluggish when the pill was on the deck and Surrey Park repelled many forward thrusts. A three goal quarter time lead was reduced to two goals at the main break but the ascendency was still with the Bloods.
It is yet to be determined whether the disappointing third term could be attributed to the usual lapse in concentration or that Surrey Park were on the juice at half time. Either way six goals to two saw us battling to stay in the contest. It was a ripping final quarter with both sides hard at the footy desperate to edge ahead and each goal was celebrated with much gusto. After kicking five goals to wrestle back the lead, it wasn't going to be relinquished without a fight. With only minutes left the Bloods were two points ahead before a couple of behinds were rushed through...could we have our second draw in as many weeks!? No, a four point win was the final margin. Archie Bourke, Jarrod Boyce, Leigh Giampietro and Bruno Elliott starred as did club's fastest man competitor Campbell Holland who kicked another 4 goals.

Warrandyte 11.9 - 75
Surrey Park 12.7 - 79

The Under 18's had a bye which could not come soon enough. The weeks rest will hopefully see a few of the boys again available for selection.

Equal Top - May 27th, 2006

The Basin have been given the tag of premiership favourites and rightfully so when you look at their list. Although they were missing a few key players for our clash against the old enemy they were still formidable opponents. We are playing as a team and we had 20 contributors on Saturday. Unfortunately this couldn't include Ren Pidgeon who did a shoulder injury in the first two minutes of the game. When Mitchell of The Basin clashed with Aidan Davey and was stretchered off the ledger was even, 20 players each.
Lincoln was again on ruck duty for an injured Dick and continued his fine form. The onballers smashed their opponents in centre clearances all day and the quick movement from the middle aided our forwardline, Morello in particular taking some inspirational marks on his way to a 10 goal haul. A pleasing aspect was that there were plenty of crumbers waiting if Magic ever spilt one. Grybas being sent off unsettled the backline and with The Basin controlling play on the wings they made the most of their opportunities. Scores were virtually level at half time and it was the third quarter that set up our win. Even with an opponent this week, Treeby continued to gather positions linking well with Logan to give plenty of drive from the half back and Holman showed his brilliance could also be utilised in defence. A five goal to two quartered gave us a 13 point lead at the last break which was extended to 38 points before The Basin kicked a couple of late goals. Will we ever play four quarters!

Warrandyte 17.7 - 109
The Basin 12.13 - 85

Reserve's - by David Young

Round 7 was declared ‘Tackle Day’ by the reserves, in obvious reference to our lack of tackling over the past few weeks. And it seemed to have some impact, with a much more physical approach shown by all concerned against an older and stronger opposition. Despite being 4 goals down early, we played some fantastic footy in a high quality game. Players were prepared to run, targets presented themselves all over the ground, and we used the ball very wisely the majority of the time. And when we hit the lead with just minutes to go, a thoroughly deserved win looked on the cards. But the Basin weren’t finished with yet, and it took all of our courage to mount one final effort, which resulted in a behind to Leigh G and a draw on the siren. Many more contributors helped allocating the votes, with Leigh G, Vitts, Dead Eye Kon, Donners, DJ Cal, Jarvo and Beefcake Boyce all worthy recipients. But whatever you do, don’t even ask me about Geoff Zach’s goalkicking!! Oh, and the winner of the ‘Tackle Day’ award, as voted by Uncle Chap Chap, was Fabulous Phil Deveny. Good to have Phil contributing in just his second game with the club.

Warrandyte 10.10 - 70
The Basin 10.10 - 70

Under 18's

A side that had taken all before them in season 2006, was depleted by injury and seniors duty and struggled to field a side against a Basin team in great form. The 18 players that could be mustered soon became 16 with 2 players sent off and then 15 when the blood rule was enforced. Not great discipline under any circumstances let alone when there is no bench. The team did play well in patches with Hammer dominating the ruck. However The Basin certainly held the upper hand around the ground and continued scoreboard pressure over the four quarters. There are certainly some positives that can be taken out of the game and the week's break couldn't come sooner. Jesse Monteiro, Watto, Hammer, Daniel, Dunny and Kell performed well.

Warrandyte 3.10 - 28
The Basin 14.8 - 92

Bloods go Five and One - May 20th, 2006

Our sources informed us that Kilsyth were confident they would prevail at Pinks Reserve and take fourth spot from us. We knew that it was going to be a difficult match to win at Pinks and the Cougars recent record against us has been good. Further forced changes were made on Thursday night after Josh Eyre’s six week penalty. The Captaincy is a bit of a curse at the moment and this is not what Greeny meant when he proposed a rotation policy. Make shift ruckman Craig Lincoln did a sterling job often providing first use to our midfield or at least nullifying the opposition taps. Kicking with a slight breeze in the first quarter we skipped to an early three goal lead. For something different Morello was being double teamed but still managed two goals and even gave a couple away. Kilsyth made the most of our regular ten minute lapse in the second quarter to bring scores level at the main break. All players and officials were attentive at the Green half time address to ensure their safety. The backline responded and repelled each attack, rebounding well to setup several scoring opportunities. There was even some old style showtime on centre wing. With Holman off the ground for the day and Young sidelined with a strained hamstring, Kilsyth were by no means out of the game. However the Bloods kicked the first goal a minute into the last term and then again moments later to skip out to a five goal lead. When Morello put through his seventh the foot came off the pedal which is often to our detriment. Kilsyth came back through a dominant Jackson. He kicked the last three goals and squandered some simple chances. Matt Treeby who hasn’t had an opponent for five weeks continued to rack up the stats, Matt Wood and Craig Lincoln were among the best. Lee Evnas and Rene Pidgeon presented well and added another string to our forwardlines bow.

Kilsyth 14.17 - 101
Warrandyte 17.12 - 114

Reserves

After such a promising start to the season our reserve's form has fallen away with two loses in as many weeks. Coach David Young must be wondering where things have gone wrong. With ten players missing out each week, it certainly isn't a depth issue and must be between the players ears. At Kilsyth our boys were never in the contest. Although Boyce and Haskings were getting plenty of it, their direct opponents were doing just as much damage for the Cougars. It was a promising return to form from young Archie Bourke and Campbell Holland was resolute in defence and attack when called upon. Bernie Optyende again performed well, but as is so often the case with our reserve's, unaccountable football doesn't win games. With some challenging games over the next fortnight we need to be at our best or risk losing touch with the four.

Kilsyth 12.15 - 87
Warrandyte 5.5 - 35

Under 18's

The Colts, without Hosking and deprived of Mullet-Treloar and Ezbery who were on Firsts duty continued, their fantastic form slowly grinding down Kilsyth to again double the oppositions score. The seasons find, Tully Greve continued his dominance in the ruck and also managed four goals. Dunny was the main contributor up forward with five of his own. In a solid team effort Beaser, Largey and smokin Joe O'Mara were the standouts. This week will be a big test for the Colts against an the Basin who have only dropped one game this year and had some big wins recently.

Kilsyth 7.8 - 50
Warrandyte 14.18 - 102

Another 3 Reasons to Party... - May 6th, 2006

We made the long trip to Ferntree Gully on an important day for the club, celebrating our 100th year at the Centenary Dinner later that evening. The seniors have not been great starters in 06 and with 5 forced changes round 4 was to be no different.
With Moose out Gully had early dominance out of the middle and the backline were under constant pressure. Our opposition kicked the first 4 goals before we were able to peg one back. Treeby and Logan settled the half back line down and McAdam was presenting well across the half forward line. Another goal prior to quarter time kept us in touch however it was far from acceptable.
An expected Green spray had the desired affect and the tempo lifted. Holman began to dominate and Reid was at the bottom of every pack. Ferntree Gully’s onballers probably had us on points and were better suited to the conditions.
A strong third term with good run from the backline and a number of targets up forward including Lee Evans took us to the last change with a 23 point lead. However we finished poorly and only a late steadying goal from Morello allowed us to sneak in by 10 points. Not putting together 4 quarters is hurting our percentage and needs to be rectified. Holman, Logan, Reid, Davey and Treeby were of the better players.

Reserves

Our Reserve’s continued their winning ways slowly wearing Gully down over four quarters. Kon Krios continued his form in front of goal booting six and Jimmy Riddell dominated in the ruck and around the ground. For the second week in a row conversion was poor, especially in the last kicking 3.9. Haskings and Boyce again starred through the middle. It is great to have so much depth pushing for senior selection and also searching for a game in the reserves.

Under 18’s - by Brad Curtis

On a heavy ground on a cold day at Ferntree Gully and with Stats, Hammer, Beaser, The Arab & Jibba out the 18's played 3 solid quarters but went to sleep in the last to o be out scored.
The first goal came via a great call on the wing from the Glove to Bres, then to Dunnie who goaled. Ollie was solid in the backline all day. A dubious umpire decision cost us the opposition's first goal. Another great pass from the Glove to Cal, to Mitch another goal. A great tap out from Tully and a rebound produced another goal. A solid mark on the flank saw Dunnie with another goal. 5.3.33 to 1.1.7
The second quarter saw Daniel tackling like Tony Liberatore and in getting in and under and wouldn't let the opposition near the ball. Zac was given a free for in the back which resulted in a goal. The back line of M.Dunnie and Ollie. Zac smothered a kick in from the opposition which produced another goal. Great ruck tap from Mullett and a follow up had him kicking for goal, but missed (how come you can kick them in the ones?). A good in and out in front of goal by Zac produced yet another goal. 9.5.59 to 2.3.15
A great snap by Dunnie one minute into the third quarter produced a goal before the scoreboard attendants could get into position. A 25m penalty gave Mitch a goal. Large hit Dunnie on the chest after a great lead who followed up with a goal. A good front and square by Scott to Large saw another goal on the board. A centering kick to the goal square by Dunnie say Tommie Wells kick a goal. 14.5.88 to 4.4.28
Kel kicked a good snap goal but the last quarter was very average with the opposition out scoring us. 15.9.99 to 6.8.44. Best: Dion, Ollie, Zac, Joe, Dunnies, Daniel, Cal & Rick

Threepeat - April 29th, 2006

After two big wins from the Colts and reserves, the pressure was on the firsts to make it a threepeat. A great start from on-ballers Wood, Eyre and McAdam provided the forwardline with pinpoint delivery took the Bloods to an early lead that we would hold for the remainder of the day. In contrast to last weeks ordinary conversion we made the most of our opportunities in front of goal to lead by 6 goals at the main break. In a disappointing third quarter Chirnside Park clawed their way back into the game with some poor Warrandyte decisions and lack of run. The chances in fron of goal that did arise were squandered. A three quarter time spray from Peter Green got the Bloods back into gear and the ball wa again going through the big sticks. The foot came off the pedal towards the siren however a four goal win was pleasing enough. Morello had the chance to kick his thenth on the siren but hit the post. The ones are still not putting four quarters together and are playing far from their best footy. This will need to be rectified sooner rather than later with some big games ahead. Better players on the day were Eyre, Dick, McAdam, Morello, Wood and under 18's Ebzery and Mullet-Treloar making his debut.
Warrandyte - 19.10.124
Chirnside Park - 15.10.100

Reserves

The magoo's bounced back from last weeks close game against Whitehorse to record a big win. It was evident in the first quarter the Bloods were going to have a day out against Chirnside when they kicked 8 goals to no score. This could of been more if the forwards had of converted.
Lee Evans stamped his authority on the game early kicking 4 and taking several strong marks inside the 50. It was a impressive debut after playing under 18's with Warrandyte in 2004. Chirnside found their feet in the second and third quarters to be more competitive, however the Bloods hit their straps in the last to record a 97 point victory.
Evans finished with 6 goals, Youngy and Kon with 3 each. Geoff Zach played one of his better games for the club well supported by Haksings, Ellis, Hudson and once again Sean Donovan who must be pushing for senior selection.

Warrandyte - 20.21.141
Chirnside Park - 6.8.44

Under 18's report by Brad Curtis

Right from the opening bounce you could tell that the Warrandyte boys had come to play kicking 6.4 to 1.1 in the first quarter. Chirnside's solitary goal being kicked after the siren. The second quarter was tighter with Warrandyte kicking 2.4 and Chirnside not bothering the scorers, before we kicked 6.5 to their 1.1 in the third term and again dominated the last quarter kicking 5.6 to their solitary goal.
Zac, Macca, Tully, Large, Tommy Wells and Jake all produced great games. Goal kickers were - Dunny & Hammer 4, Tully, The Arab, Wato, 2, Kel, Macca, Cal, Joe & Ollie 1. It was a great effort from the Arab turning up at 1/2 time and kicking 2.3 and assisting with 2 other goals. Tommy Wells landed on the ball trying to take a mark and released his breakfast! Bres (Angry) and Hammer copped a yellow card when we were 100 points up which was a bit disappointing. Joffes put in a top performance for his first game back.
All up it was a great team effort with good team play, hard tackling, sheppards and support from all over the ground.
Warrandyte - 19.23.137
Chirnside Park - 3.2.20

Back to Earth - April 22nd, 2006

Last time we played Whitehorse back in 1998 we won by 176 points. It was certainly going to be a harder this time around with Whitehorse going in favourites. Having at least 70% of the ball in the first quarter did not bring results, in fact it was the Pioneers that led after kicking very accurately and making the most of their opportunities. This was a trend that would unfortunately continue throughout the day. The Bloods certainly didn't bring the 'A game' and were punished accordingly. Whitehorse ran the ball out of the middle well and capitalised on our mistakes which were all too frequent. Morello continued to provide a good marking target up forward and even when double teamed came up with a strong mark or brought the ball to ground. The third quarter saw Warrandyte with the run of play early however when Naughtin went off with a broken jaw and we were left without a bench, Whitehorse lifted and used their posession very well continuing to mount scoreboard pressure. In the final term the Pioneers midfield ran hard to give their forwards every chance to kick away. The fifty point margin was not a true indication of a competitive match around the ground. Davey, Wood, Gordon and Stewart were among our better players. We will certainly go into Round 11 confident of turning the tables.
Whitehorse Pioneers - 20-3-123
Warrandyte - 10-13-73

Reserves

The reserves match was a great game to watch with the scoreboard regularly ticking over in a see-sawing affair. Holland and Krios being late inclusions certainly proved to be a good decision kicking nine goals between them. The Bloods let Whitehorse take the lead in the third kicking six goals to four. The Warrandyte midfield, led by Rowdy Holman and Sean Donovan, got back on top clawing the margin back to within a point. It was however, the Pioneers day winning by 7 points.Better players for the Bloods; Holman, Vitiritti, Krios, Zach, Holland and Haskings.
Whitehorse Pioneers - 12-7-79
Warrandyte - 11-6-72

Under 18's - Brad Curtis

Our first game was against the team put forward as the competition bench mark after kicking 153 points in their first game. The first quarter was an even affair with not one goal kicked, but the Bloods were getting the upper hand with Mullet, Tom Dlabik and Ezbery pushing the ball forward. In the second quarter we finally found the goals to kick 3-2 to nothing. The third stanza was totally dominated by the Bloods kicking 6-2 to one point. In the final quarter Diesel rang the changes with Mullet, Hammer, Mitch Canham and Yarren Bektash having a rest. Highlights from the game included Kelly Beaumont's first kick being a goal (great to see you back); Brendan Zach's third quarter; Tom's first half in the centre set it all up for the rest of the game; Dion Mullet & Ezbery killed them across the ground and Paul Burgoyne just burnt everybody. It was a great team effort and it's good to see Dan, Kelly, Jess, Steve & Tully back and debuts with the Bloods from Cal, Jake, Ben, Luke D, Matt D, Brendan and Tom.
Warrandyte - 11-14-80

Festival Fizzer - April 8th, 2006

Off the field, what could go wrong, did go wrong! Our much anticpiated centenary celebrations didn't go to plan. The aboriginal involvement was a late withdrawl from the program due to political unrest in the Botanical Gardens, technical difficulties played havoc with our national anthem and the weather was not on our side. On the positive note a 'healthy' crowd watched 3 wins from 3 games and 2006 was off to a winning start.
Whilst it wasn't an official match the unders weren't holding back and had a great hit out with Chirnside Park. The late withdrawl of Eastern Lion's under 18 side would have left both teams sitting idle on Saturday morning so a last minute game was arranged. The boys slowy came together as a unit and ran away comfortable winners. Both sides had key players missing and we look forward to the rematch in three weeks.
The reserve's had an unsettled preparation with an uncertain line-up, Thursday night selection was no easy task. Kicking with the wind in the first quarter the Bloods squandered many opportunites and the Eastern Lions went into the first break in a good position. As Warrandyte was getting on top and kicking ahead against the wind, the second stanza was marred by a cowardly king hit behind play which developed into an 'all in' that temporarily stopped play. Both captains decided to bring half time forward and when the game resumed the Bloods continued to forge ahead. A good fight back saw the Lions come within a goal, however it was Warrandyte taking the points and will certainly look to improve in the coming rounds.
In the main game Eastern won the toss and kicked with a strong wind. A fast opening soon settled into an end to end contest which was hampered by the conditions. The Lions went into the break with a two goal lead and Warrandyte came out in the second term and 'blazed away'. Whilst kicking five goals to nil, if the ball was used properly this should of been more. A six goal to two third quarter had the Lions in front at three quarter time but it was never going to be a big enough lead with the wind still present. Two loose men in defence for both sides resulted in kick to kick between the half back lines and one wonders how this was ever going to win Eastern the game. The Bloods running out victors by 3 goals. First use Moose 'dicked' them in the ruck, Morrello bagged 6 and Green 5. Other good players for Warrandyte were Grybas, Treeby, Reid, Naughtin, Logan & Wood.

Just Enough - March 25th, 2006

After a solid performance against Templestowe, our second practice match against North Coburg, was uninspiring. Although it was another win, the attack on the ball dropped away and numbers to each contest not up to expectation. The merits of a simple game plan were highlighted when put into practice and it was our high fitness level that eventually saw us overrun North Coburg in 30 degree heat. Again missing ten regular firsts players the young Bloods, including Under 18's Luke Ezbery and Joe O'Mara, stepped up and showed they are able to more than hold their own at senior level.

Dragons Slayed - March 19th, 2006

It's always good to get the first hit out underway and playing on a surface like Arden Street makes it even better. The Under 18's teamed up well and showed some fantastic passages of play with quick hands and good skills. They will certainly give it a shake this year. Games traffic didn't help the numbers in the reserve's but a solid performance by the experienced faces and good signs from the new brigade will take some confidence into the coming weeks. The seniors dominated Templestowe in the centre with clean hands and good delivery to the forwardline. Both sides were missing their ruckmen which no doubt added to the scrappy football displayed. Solid performances by our recruits and players returning to the club has provided a confidence lacking over recent years. Granted Templestowe were missing 4 or 5 regular senior players but we also went in without some of our best; Wood, Holman, Dick, Dart, Kearney, Wheatley, Templeton, Gordon, McAdam, Bourke, Richardson, Potter & Ellis. An exciting season lays ahead.

The Old Firm - March 5th, 2006

Unfortunately too many of our past players drift away after hanging up their boots. In 2006 the club has endeavoured to right this wrong. McCartin, Quinlan and Valentine, names synonymous with Warrandyte Football Club during the 90's have all been appointed to coaching roles for the coming season.
Glen McCartin (Conan), a 1993 premiership player, will be assistant coach to Peter Green focusing on specialist training and skills development. Chris Quinlan (Boot), a premiership player in '99 and our leading goalkicker of that year, has been appointed Chairman of Selectors calling the shots on match day. As announced earlier Brad "Diesel" Valentine is at the helm of our Under 18 squad.
With the return of premiership players Ash Grybas and Aaron Woolley, a winning culture is being bred into the young playing list. In the hands of the 'old firm' we can expect big things from the Bloods in '06.

Tribute to Tindale - February 8th, 2006

More than 150 friends and colleagues filled the WFC Social Rooms to pay their respects to Lee Tindale. Junior President Dennis Hoiberg and Warrandyte Diary editor Cliff Green reflected on the life and career of Lee who came to Melbourne and Warrandyte from Western Australia. Lee's coverage of the football, cricket, netball, basketball and tennis clubs in Warrandyte was extraordinary and always hot off the press. Lee, who also wrote the Smokey Joe column, will be sorely missed around the club and the community. We bid farewell to a friend.

RFC Boxing Training - February 2006

25 enthusiastic Bloods players headed into Punt Road oval on Friday to make use of the Richmond Football Club's facilities. Under the tutelage of Tiger's boxing and weights trainer, John Vickery, the boys were put through a rigorous 70 minute boxing circuit and 20 minute swim recovery. It is fair to say that the recovery session has continued over the weekend. The Club would like to thank Stephen Bell for his assistance in bringing the session to fruition.

Under 18 Coach Appointed - January 2006

We are pleased to annouce Brad Valentine as our Under 18's coach for season 2006. A distinguished player with the Bloods, "Sweetpea" debuted in 1991 at age 16 and continued to play regular senior football in 1992. At the ripe age of 18 he was a key member of the 1993 premiership team. After a short stint at Bacchus Marsh, Brad returned to the Bloods in 1996 playing until he retired after the 1999 premiership win. Pea's football experience and knowledge will be fantastic for this year's Under 18's and Colts sides. Aided by his assistant coach Mark Watson it should be an exciting year ahead for the young Bloods!

Twenty20 Scorcher - January 2006

42 degree's, the eskies stacked and the barbie fired up. The scene was set for the innaugural Twenty20 Cup between WFC & WCC. The cricket club batted first and scoring at almost ten an over set the footy club 198 for the loss of 8 wickets. Dropping 16 catches certainly didn't help our cause. Digby and Tuckers set a solid platform but a middle order collapse made the run chase out of our reach. Archie Bourke helped make the score look respectable - 14/172.
Congratulations to the Cricket Club who helped put on a great day. Unfortunately the skipper broke the trophy within minutes of the presentation! We look forward to next year which is sure to be bigger and better than 06.

Season 2006 Begins - November 2005

It seems like only a couple of weeks since our last training run yet preseason has already commenced. Last Monday, the 28th, 38 players hit the track to kick off the 2006 campaign. It was great to see so many young fresh faces which generated good enthusiasm. The lack of 'senior' faces was notable and with the sessions Greeny has planned in the new year the boys will need to do some work over Christmas in preparation. There are six training sessions before the break, culminating in a joint session, BBQ and Xmas drinks with the cricket club on Thursday December 14th. All supporters are welcome.
